Walking into a Newport Creamery for the first time can be overwhelming — the menu is big and everything looks good. Here's your no-nonsense guide to the must-try items.
Your Game Plan
So you've heard about Newport Creamery. Maybe a friend dragged you here. Maybe you moved to Rhode Island and people won't stop telling you about the Awful Awful. Maybe you're visiting from out of state and doing research. Whatever brought you here, welcome. Let us help you navigate your first visit.
Step 1: The Awful Awful (Non-Negotiable)
Whatever else you order, you're getting an Awful Awful. This is not optional. This is the entire reason Newport Creamery exists in the cultural consciousness of Rhode Island. Order a coffee or chocolate — these are the two best flavors and the ones that will give you the truest Awful Awful experience.
When it arrives, try to drink it through the straw immediately. You'll probably fail — it's too thick. That's normal. Use a spoon for the first few minutes, then transition to the straw as it softens. This is the Awful Awful experience.
Step 2: The Main Event
For your entrée, you have two paths:
The Burger Path: Go with the Holy Cow Burger. Two patties, cheese, special sauce, the works. It's our best sandwich and the one that will make you understand why people eat here multiple times a week.
The Comfort Path: If burgers aren't your thing, the grilled cheese is a masterpiece of simplicity, and the fish and chips (especially on a Friday) is classic New England done right.
Step 3: Sides
Fries. Always fries. If you're feeling ambitious, add onion rings. Both are excellent, but the fries are the move for your first visit. Simple, crispy, and perfect for dipping in ketchup between bites of your burger.
Step 4: If You Still Have Room
If you somehow finish all of that and want dessert (respect), the make-your-own sundae is the way to go. Pick your base flavor, pick your toppings, and enjoy the fact that you're eating ice cream that's made right here, not shipped in from a warehouse.
What to Skip on Your First Visit
Nothing on our menu is bad, but save the salads and wraps for your third or fourth visit. Your first time should be unapologetically indulgent. You'll have plenty of time to eat healthy later. Today is about experiencing Newport Creamery the way it was meant to be experienced.
Welcome to the family. You're going to love it here.
