Every Friday, Rhode Islanders line up for fish and chips. It's a tradition rooted in faith, sustained by flavor, and kept alive at places like Newport Creamery.
Every Friday, Without Fail
If you've lived in Rhode Island for any length of time, you know what Friday means: fish and chips. It doesn't matter if it's July or January. It doesn't matter if it's Lent or not. Friday is fish day, and that's simply how it works here.
The tradition has Catholic roots — abstaining from meat on Fridays, particularly during Lent. But like a lot of Rhode Island food traditions, it evolved beyond its origin. Today, Fish and Chips Friday is a cultural institution that crosses every demographic. Everybody does it. And we wouldn't miss it for the world.
How We Do It
Our fish and chips is straightforward and unapologetic. Fresh fish, dipped in a light batter, fried until golden and crispy on the outside while staying flaky and tender inside. Served with hand-cut fries, creamy coleslaw, tartar sauce, and a lemon wedge. Nothing fancy. Nothing experimental. Just excellent execution of a classic.
The batter is key. Too heavy and it overwhelms the fish. Too light and it falls apart. Ours hits the sweet spot — crispy enough to crunch, light enough that you can taste the fish underneath. It takes practice to get right consistently, and we've had a lot of practice.
The Friday Rush
We'll level with you: our kitchens are busiest on Fridays. Across all eight locations, fish and chips is the number one seller every single Friday, year-round. The lunch and dinner rushes are real. If you can, come during off-peak hours. If you can't, bring your patience — it's worth the wait.
A Tradition Worth Keeping
There's something beautiful about a food tradition that just keeps going. No marketing campaign keeps Fish and Chips Friday alive. No social media trend revived it. Rhode Islanders do it because they've always done it, because their parents did it, because it's part of the rhythm of life here.
We're proud to be one of the places that carries this tradition forward. See you Friday.
